Too much nitrogen in the soil?
No, it was a combination of factors. The carrots weren't thinned when they were young. Then, they got pulled up when they were still scrawny and then replanted. They weren't watered enough (which is where the splitting came in) and I think they hit hard objects in the bed which caused twisting and turning.
